Rick Astley & The Human Society: The Psychological Point of View

The majority of us are quite familiar with the term "Rick Roll." If not, here's what it is:

A "Rick Roll," is a form of internet prank in which a person tricks someone into watching the music video for Rick Astley's song, "Never Gonna Give You Up." This can be taken to more of an extreme by hiding the lyrics of the song in text messages, e-mails, and whatever else you can think of. The most famous Rick Roll was at an NBA game (I can't remember where), where the song started playing on the stadium's sound system, and a guy dressed up as Rick Astley ran around.

There is a small population of people that actually do enjoy Rick Rolls. There is one of two reasons for this: they either enjoy the song, or the misery of the people around them pleases them greatly. For the majority of the human population, they get angry that they got Rick Roll'd; almost disappointed in themselves that they let something like that happen to them [again, for some]. When this happens, the Rick Rollee tries to come up with a way to retaliate back to the original Rick Roller. Most of the time they fail because they don't wait long enough, and the original Rick Roller is expecting it.

So, I waited a while, and decided to experiment myself. I sent a text to a handful of people with the chorus to the Rick Roll song. I got the following responses:

My mother: "I hate you."
John: "Whore!"
Colleen: "Fuck you."
Sean: "Don't ever talk to me again."
Chris: "You forgot the N lololol" <-- I forgot what N he was talking about.
Ryan: "You listen to Rick Astley?"
Denise: "Did I just get Rick Roll'd?"
Kevin: "You bastard!"
Cody: "You dirty goddamn cunt."

And of course my favorite, from my stepfather Bryan, "What's wrong with Rick Astley? I love Rick Astley."

As you see here, eight out of ten responses were negative, one of of the ten wasn't mad at all, and the last was simply confused and in question of wether or not it was even a Rick Roll.

So as you see, Rick Rolls have a positive and negative impact on our society. The Rick Roller themselves have a positive impact because they bring jokes and pranks into our lives. The Rollees just bitch, whine, and complain.

But at some point, we're both.
