SOUTH
PASADENA - If you're planning a trip into this city this week, watch your
language.
The City Council has accepted a call to action from one of its
younger citizens to keep profanity out of the picture this week and proclaimed
it as "Cuss Free Week" in South Pasadena.
The proclamation is the brainchild
of 14-year-old McKay Hatch, a South Pasadena High School freshman who received
the council's blessing after delivering a speech during public comment at a
council meeting in October.
"I was really nervous the whole time," said
McKay, who started the No Cussing Club at his high school in June. "I couldn't
sit still in my seat. I was really scared."
Despite his nervousness, the
council was impressed with the idea. Mayor Michael Cacciotti, who has waged a
30-year battle against cursing as a soccer coach, said Cuss Free Week in South
Pasadena is a "positive action with many benefits."
Cacciotti said, as a
coach, he enforced a no-cussing policy by requiring members of his team to do 10
push-ups each time they used profanity.
"It's part of exercising
self-discipline," Cacciotti explained. "It's about treating each other with love
and respect. Profane language causes pain, anger and could lead to violence."
On Wednesday, the mayor will present McKay with a copy of the proclamation
declaring it Cuss Free Week in the city.
McKay's father, Brent, said hei son
eventually hopes to have Cuss Free Week adopted
in cities across the San
Gabriel Valley.
Since starting his anti-cursing crusade in middle school,
McKay has become somewhat of a veteran public speaker, having been interviewed
by newspaper reporters, radio broadcasters and television news anchors. He also
made an appearance on Shepard Smith's "The Fox Report" on the Fox News Channel.
"At first, he was really nervous to where he was shaking. But now he enjoys
it," Brent Hatch said.
Brent and and his wife, Phelecia, are co-authors of a
family guide called "Raising a G-Rated Family in an X-Rated World."
But the
club has grown more than just locally.
McKay said the club has reached all
50 states and is in other countries, with about 100 members per day signing up
via the Web site www.nocussing.com.
He said the club now has members in more
than 30 countries, with 15 chapters and 10,000 members worldwide.
